Animated Magazine Brief

Animation Brief- Online Animated Magazine

Name – Sal Wilson

CVA 204

I have been working with the Student Union Team for this year, and one of the projects I have been overseeing is the launch of the new student magazine. The challenge for this brief is to create an online version of this, with animation sequences for each page transition. Eight transitions will be needed. I will be using Maya and Flash for this project. I will be creating the concepts, models, and animations for this project. Whilst there will obviously be texturing, it will not be a large part of this brief.

The challenge is to create something that enhances the website viewing experience; whilst at the same time does not becoming annoying to the viewer. So I am looking to make each animation approximately 3 seconds long.

The sounds for the transitions will have an organic quality, to accompany the animation style, which will have sharp 3D elements, coupled with some particle effects, whilst at the same time having a very tranquil and Zen like quality. The colours will be very light, with a strong use of global illumination.

I have come up with ten ideas, from which I will create the final Five. Each animation starts with one page and ends with the next page in the sequence of the magazine. Each is reversed when someone goes to the previous page. Below are the ten ideas explained.

BLOCK

The page breaks into twelve blocks, 3 x 4. These then gently tumble down and to the right, where they then reform, as they land/bounce into position, as the new page.

GROWTH

From the top of the page spring three creepers with Venus flytrap heads. The camera pans up with the heads as the swirl and snap at each other. They then touch the new page and merge with it, as the camera pans up in front of the new page.

WATER

The page begins to ripple, then gushes down, then sloshes into an invisible container the shape of the new page, the last drops fall in, the water stills, and the new page is formed.

SMOKE

The page, pops into a cloud of smoke, which then swirls to the left where it then re-solidifies into the new page.

SLINGSHOT

This is quite a simple animation, but a strong one. The page in sight appears to be stretched back, as if being pulled back, and then released; the new page is shot forward from the centre of the old one, where it wobbles slightly then settles.

BRAIN

The camera pulls out to reveal that the page is actually inside the brain of someone’s head, thought clouds then appear above the head, which then show the new page, the camera then zooms into this one.

SNAG

The page begins as normal, then gets snagged and scratched by invisible objects. It is then pulled into place as the new page.

PUMP

A pipe appears at the top of the page and what appears to be bubbles pump/rise up it, the camera pans up, to see the new page being blown up to size.

ORAGAMI

This is probably my favourite, and I’m considering maybe using this idea more then once. The page folds up into an origami shape, has a small animation, and then unfolds into the new page.

TWISTER

The page breaks up into three pieces which then spin on their individual axis’. They then reform but Horizontal, to form the poster of the magazine.
